DEDHAM 7miles FLATFORD MILL 8miles COLCHESTER 10miles SUBURY 22miles
'Here, in the wild hills above the Dedham Vale, St Mary's church, Stoke by Nayland, lifts its great red tower to heaven, and nothing can compare with it.'
John Constable loved this tower, and it appears several times in his paintings, not always in the right place. Simon Jenkins, in England's 1000 Best Churches, says that when the bells of Stoke-by-Nayland ring, all Suffolk stops to listen. All Essex too, perhaps, since this church is right on the border between the two counties.
For the art lover, a visit to Gainsborough's house in Sudbury is really obligatory. In the other direction, in Dedham, there is the Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum and, a little further on Flatford Mill, the setting for John Constable's 'The Haywain'. For the golf enthusiast there is the Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, situated in 300 acres of beautiful undulating Suffolk countryside, on the edge of the Dedham Vale. It enjoys secluded tranquility yet is only one hour from both Stansted Airport and London.
Rouses Farm Cottage overlooks the gently rolling hills of the Suffolk borders where there is excellent riding and walking opportunities. Just a couple of miles from Higham Race Course and close to the Suffolk Show Ground visitors may wish to bring ponies or horses. The farm has two standard stables and a foaling box which can accommodate 2 to 3 ponies. Prices from £15 per stable per night (horses must be fully vaccinated).
