Corner Cottage, Orford, Suffolk
Style: Red brick traditional Suffolk cottage
Setting: In the heart of Orford on the Suffolk coast
Know what you are getting:
House style: A nicely converted Victorian cottage with large open plan kitchen / dining room and large sitting room. The ground floor shower room is a great bonus after a day on the beach or sailing. A good sized fenced garden (mainly laid to lawn) will really suit the youngsters and is great for al fresco eating.
Ideal for: Those looking for a seaside holiday without the candifloss and arcades! Cyclists, walkers, sailors and anyone interested in history, bird watching and good food will love it.
Eating and Drinking: You couldn't be in a better place. Orford is rightly famed for its fine smokeries (two) selling smoked fish, cheese and hams. There are two fine restaurants in Orford, The Butley Orford Oysterage and The Trinity Bistro both have a well deserved international reputation for excellent local produce menus. The village shop has everything including a very good tea shop and there is a good butcher. Fresh fish can be bought down at the quay and there is a lovely tea room overlooking the water. There is a small sandy area at the quay for toddlers
Children: Corner Cottage has a really good supply of books and family games and a fenced garden. Orford has great playing fields with swings, slides etc., and little ones will love the castle field with its cannons and Orford Castle (English Heritage). There are a number of boat trips available. A 1-hour cruise on The Regardless (fascinating for adults and voted number one by several recent visitors (7 - 10) as children are introduced to the lobsters and crabs in the river and given a chance to see the lobster pots for themselves. Take the National Trust boat over to Orford Ness, where you can look at the development of radar during World War II as well as seeing the seals, ground nesting birds and rare flora of the shingle bank - a fantastic day for all ages.
Music - there is a music centre in the sitting room as well as a radio and small TV. Orford Church has a good selection of recitals and concerts throughout the year and Snape Maltings Concert Hall, home of Aldeburgh Music is just 5 miles away.
Packing tips: Beach towels, wellington boots, bird books and binoculars, bikes and crabbing lines.
