Barn Owl Barn

Walpole, Near Halesworth, Suffolk, UK

Style: A traditional Suffolk, tiled and brick barn with clapperboard facing. Originally an L-shaped cattle barn, Barn Owl Barn has been beautifully converted to create a really spacious holiday cottage for two. Vaulted ceilings, beams and stud work have been retained and interwoven to create that old-world feel, but floor to ceiling glass in the south facing living room lets in loads of light.

Grounds: So sunny is the courtyard that the owners have planted a wonderful vine; its grapes made into excellent wine.

The large south facing terrace surrounded by traditional Suffolk brick walls, almost certainly the original farm yard, is a wonderful space in which to relax and take afternoon tea.

Sleeps 2 (and a baby in arms)

Ideal for: Anyone really looking to get away from it all, who enjoys peace and wants real comfort. Walkers, bird watchers and fishermen will love it - there is a 1.5 acre lake behind the barn with carp, roach, rudd and perch.

For anyone interested in history visit Halesworth, a fascinating old market town - visit the station museum and take a wander through the streets. Superb art galleries at Halesworth and Southwold.

Eating & Drinking: There are two excellent pubs in Halesworth and The Cut, a wonderful venue for the arts. Halesworth has a really good deli in the Thoroughfare and a weekly market (Wednesday) selling excellent local produce including fresh fish from nearby Southwold, where there are some great restaurants and shops as well as a number of excellent Adnams pubs. Children: While young babies are more than welcome Barn Owl Barn is not suitable for youngsters and is much better enjoyed by a couple. The Surroundings: Barn Owl Barn is on the edge of the beautiful village of Walpole on the River Blyth backing on to farmland. The water meadows on either side of the river are a delight; surrounded by traditional Suffolk cottages and houses, you might easily believe that you had stepped back 100 years. No trip would be complete without a visit to The Old Chapel, the oldest surviving Nonconformist meeting place in the country. Built as a farmhouse in 1607, it was converted 40 years later. It is little changed today, with a three-tiered pulpit and simple wooden box-pews.
