The Pool House, Workhouse Green, Nr Sudbury, Suffolk
Lavenham 10 miles, Sudbury 4 miles, Long Melford 6.5 miles, Stoke-by Nayland 7.45 miles
Style: A single storey spacious beach house style property with large picture windows overlooking the pool (shared use with the owners) and private garden.
Eating & drinking: If the weather is good a barbecue by the pool would be heaven. There is an excellent pub - The Shoulder of Mutton - in Assington (about 2 miles) - it's a free house recommended by the owners and Suffolk Camra!. There is also an excellent farm shop in the village. Sudbury has a wonderful deli, its a bit like Fortnums Food Hall, they also have a large Waitrose. Milsoms at Dedham is great for Sunday lunch. There are also two excellent restaurants in Long Melford and several nice old fashioned tea shops in Lavenham. The real eating gem is The Great House restaurant in Lavenham - 'East of England Restaurant of the year 2009'(Which? Good Food Guide)
Setting: To one side of the owner's house, The Pool House has its own entrance gates and private garden.
Grounds: To the rear of the Pool House is a walled and gated garden with heated swimming pool, terrace, garden chairs, table and loungers. The barbecue is built into the exterior of the sitting room. The front garden is hedged and includes an area of lawn with a bricked terrace where there is a garden table and chairs.
The garden (including the area belonging to the owners) is fenced, although a really determined dog might find an escape route!
Children: Only suitable for babies in arms - there is no child fencing around the pool.
Ideal for: Anyone who likes to walk straight out of the house and into the pool (heated between May and September). You might also like to visit some of the lovely towns and houses in the area. This is a great base for artists and art lovers. Sudbury is just a 10-minute drive away - Gainsborough's house is a gem (many lovely paintings, good tea room and lovely garden). Down by the river (much loved by Griff Rhys Jones) is the Quay Theatre - some excellent productions can be enjoyed.
You are close to Constable Country which extends along the Stour River from Sudbury towards the sea. There are lovely walks along the river, do make time for a visit to Flatford Mill (another National Trust) property where the landscape is litte changed from Constable's time.
A little further afield is Lavenham (an ancient wool town) with The Guildhall (National Trust) and nearby is Long Melford. All worth a visit
For more information on the area do visit Visit Suffolk Countryside and Dedham Vale (Constable Country)Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Packing: It is tempting to say bring your swimmers and leave it at that, but you would miss out on some stunning towns and countryside if you simply stayed by the pool. Artists should bring sketchbooks, walkers - boots, cyclists - bikes and everyone should bring a camera. There are boat trips down the Stour and the scenery is wonderful. Don't forget your National Trust card.
