Refuse Collection

Refuse disposal can be something of a challenge for anyone on holiday and it is very tempting to load everything into a black sack and forget about it. But such a response affects both our carbon footprint and others’ enjoyment of the wonderful Suffolk countryside.

So how do you get rid of rubbish when you are holidaying in Suffolk?

First you have to know which district you are in:

  1. Forest Heath District Council
  2. St Edmundsbury Borough Council
  3. Babergh District Council
  4. Mid Suffolk District Council
  5. Ipswich Borough Council
  6. Suffolk Coastal District Council
  7. Waveney District Council

Suffolk Coastal District Council (the coastal area from Felixstowe in the south to just north of Dunwich and inland to Framlingham)

Waveney District Council (north east Suffolk including Southwold, Halesworth, Beccles and Bungay

Suffolk Coastal:
A bit of a challenge as not all properties have moved to the new environmentally friendly collection system
If your holiday cottage has a dustbin and a brown wheelie bin then the following applies:
Brown bin - Food waste, garden cuttings and weeds (collected fortnightly)
Dustbin (with black sacks) - All other non-recyclable rubbish (collected weekly)
Please ensure sacks are securely tied and put out just before collection time. Bags left out will attract all manner of ‘wildlife’ (and not necessarily the type you want to have at the back door!).
NB There are lots of recycling centres around with can banks and bottle banks as well as newspaper recycling. Do wash out cans before recycling For more information go to Recycling in the Suffolk Coastal District area

If your cottage has three bins, Brown, Grey with a Blue Lid and plain Grey then please follow instructions below Bins are collected alternate weeks:
Brown Degradable - food waste, garden cuttings and weeds
Grey with Blue Lid Recyclable rubbish - plastics (with the exception of bags and film), cans, paper, cardboard and foil. Items should be clean and dry.
Grey - Non recyclable household waste
Bottles are NOT collected by the council, so if you could take these to a bottle bank whilst you are out and about we would be really grateful.

Waveney District:
Universal system, again with bins collected alternate weeks
Black bin - Non recyclable household waste
Green bin - Garden waste
Blue bin - Recyclable rubbish - plastics (with the exception of bags and film), cans, paper, cardboard and foil. Items should be clean and dry.
Bottles are NOT collected by the council, so please take these to a bottle bank whilst you are out and about .

Out and About
Our beaches, heaths and woodlands are some of the most beautiful in the country, their unique habitat home to some rare and beautiful wildlife. Please help keep these special environments clean by ensuring you leave no rubbish.
Litter Pick
Not all the plastics found on the beach will be the result of holidaymakers, a lot of old plastics, bits of fishing net etc are washed up on our shores every year. Such items kill a lot of our most attractive sea birds as well as being unsightly for holidaymakers. A half hour family litter pick as part of your holiday in Suffolk will really help the environment and help enormously in the conservation of this precious coastline.
