Orford & the Ore Estuary
Orford is without doubt one of the most charming and interesting places on the East coast. It has something for everyone.
Whether you arrive by sea or land you will see the impressive church tower and castle keep from several miles away. Much of Orford Castle has now disappeared but the keep remains largely intact, giving us some clue to the importance of the original 12th century building. Views from the top of the tower are fantastic. St Bartholomew's Church was built at the same time, although the present church dates from the 14th century; do take time to look around its interior and look at the dove which commemorates the first production of Benjamin Britten's Noye's Fludde. A favourite haunt for music lovers, there is the bonus of Aldeburgh Music just a few miles down the road. Whilst many concerts are now performed at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall in Snape, Orford Church is still a venue of choice for a number of excellent concerts, recitals and operas throughout the year.
The town (a very small one, admittedly) has all the old fashioned charm of yesteryear but none of the neglect. Cottage interiors, pubs and the hotel have all been updated to suit the demands of today's visitor with many 4 star and 5 star luxury cottages including Anchor Cottage, a top quality property in the delightful High Street and The Pump House in Orford Square. You can enjoy good food, wine and of course the famous Adnam's beer in pleasant surroundings where the atmosphere is friendly without being intrusive.
A walk down to the quay is almost obligatory (for luxury accommodation with 5 star views see
Quay View) and once there it is tempting to stroll along the river
bank and if you so wish back along one of the country lanes. The views are spectacular! Opposite the quay is Orford Ness, the ever expanding shingle spit, which is now in
the custody of the National Trust. Well worth a visit there is much to see including everything from seals and occasional whales to ground nesting birds and war time
research pagodas. Havergate Island, the RSPB bird reserve, is also worth a visit and there is choice of boat trips along the river.
