Self catering holiday cottages in and around Orford
Orford is something of an enigma, a small coastal town (really little
more than a village these days) it remains the prettiest village on the
Suffolk coast. Fame and fortune visited Orford in the late medieval period
when its excellent port attracted continental trade and from where Suffolk's
wool and local produce would have been exported.
Fine houses, a great church
and of course the famous landmark Orford Castle were all built during
this affluent period which continued until the silting up of the seaport
and
the expansion of the spit - now stretching from Aldeburgh to Shingle
Street - put a stop the expansion of Orford.
Today it sports two famous
restaurants,
The Butley and Orford Oysterage and The Trinity at The Crown and Castle,
three good pubs, and some excellent food shops. With wonderful views
from the river bank Orford is surrounded by fine coastal and woodland
walks. From the quay there are boat trips to Havergate Island and Orford
Ness,
while sailing boats and yachts and even the occasional Thames barge
ply up and down the estuary. Orford has an old world charm all of its own
and
some lovely cottages in which to enjoy a relaxing holiday, including
Millers Cottage, Mariners
Cottage, Ruffles
Cottage, Quay View, The
Loft and Pavilion
Barn.
Since the inception of the Aldeburgh Festival Orford Church has
been the venue for first performances and close to Snape, home of the
world
famous Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Orford and near by Sudbourne
- see Field End Cottage - are great places in which to stay when going
to
concerts.
Snape too is a great place to stay, with fine concerts and superb
views over the estuary; you can walk to Aldeburgh along the Sailors Path.
Cottages in Snape include Fourways
Cottage and Whitewalls Cottage
. Within
the
Suffolk
Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with magnificent
views of heqathland, reedbeds, marshes, the Alde estuary and of course
the sea
at every turn it is little surprise that Orford and its surroundings
is a favourite haunt of artists, musicians and writers.
