"Fantastic stay at a homely but spacious cottage with a delightful garden. Three families, including five children, fitted comfortably & played countless games of hide & seek in both the house & garden. Bawdsey Quay & Ramsholt provide great sandy locations, fun & relaxing for all. Loved the arty, relaxed feel of the house - a thoroughly pleasurable stay." Sept 2012

About the property

East Lane Cottage has been extensively refurbished over the last couple of years. Both spacious and cosy with rustic character, the cottage provides extremely adaptable accommodation making it ideal for friends or family. The ground floor twin bedroom has an en-suite shower room with w.c and basin making it suitable for anyone who may not wish to negotiate stairs, while the summer house makes a peaceful retreat. The cottage is busy and homely and reflects the owner's love of embroidery, textiles and art.

Setting

In the tiny coastal village of Bawdsey just half a mile from the sea and the mouth of the Deben Estuary, where there is a lovely sandy beach, a foot ferry and sailing school, East Lane Cottage is very popular with cyclists and walkers. A selection of old bikes are available for your use via prior arrangement with the owner.

Here there is something for everyone; fine walking along the Suffolk coast and across the heaths, quiet byways for cycling and horse riding, sailing on the Deben estuary and RSPB reserves at Havergate and Minsmere and National Trust sites at Sutton Hoo and Orford Ness. East Lane beach, Bawdsey quay and Orford Island are all very popular with anglers providing fishing marks for cod through the Winter and bass in the Autumn. This stretch of beach is rich in fossils but you may need to sieve the clay, great fun for all the family.

For those who simply want to get away from it all and relax in or overlooking the delightful garden, there is the choice of the family sitting room, and a splendid summer house. The typically English country garden, complete with wildlife pond, is full-to-the-bursting with colour during spring and summer and makes for a truly wonderful place to enjoy all year round.

Self catering eating and drinking

Grocery deliveries are available from the major supermarkets and Alderton is a five minute drive away and has a lovely little village shop selling all your essential provisions plus freshly grown local fruit and veg. There are plenty of farm shops and independent grocers selling locally sourced produce, scattered across the Suffolk countryside, Five Winds Butchers at Melton is excellent, supplied from a local farm, and Woodbridge Farmers Market is worth a visit.

Eating out

The nearest pub is The Swan, Alderton only 1.5 miles away, serving authentic Indian food either in house or to take away. The Sorrell Horse Inn, is a delightful pub, just 15 minutes drive away in the pretty village of Shottisham, a traditional Suffolk pub, serving real cask ales, simple fresh food and a very warm welcome.( wi-fi available)

For a real treat you must visit The British Larder, offering a top quality, contemporary British menu.

The Market town of Woodbridge has an abundance of pubs and restaurant to suit all tastes and is only 20 minutes by car. The Anchor, has an interesting menu and usually includes an excellent authentic Malaysian dish. There is also two fine Indian restaurants, Prezzo, and a popular Chinese restaurant all within easy walking distance of the Quay Point car park. The Riverside theatre and restaurant is a traditional picture house showing the latest films and the adjoining restaurant is excellent.

Packing tips

Don't forget beach towels, fishing rod, crabbing lines, bucket and spade.
