THORPENESS 1.75 miles (2.83 km), ALDEBURGH 4 miles ( km), WOODBRIDGE 16 miles ( km), SOUTHWOLD 17 miles ( km), FRAMLINGHAM 13 miles (22 km)

About this Suffolk Cottage Holidays property:
Arch House, Aldringham, has been beautifully extended to create a wonderful Big House sleeping up to 12 holidaymakers. The  owners have many years of experience in the industry, and have let Old Hall Barn, Darsham through Big House Holidays for over five years. Consequently the refurbishment of Arch House was planned with holidaymaker requirements in mind.

The original house was designed by local architect Cecil Lay, and the attractive Edwardian features have been carefully retained. New features include a very well equipped, state of the art family kitchen with large central island, where guests can enjoy a drink and chat whilst preparing a meal. The property boasts a large and light dining area for long, leisurely dinners and a wonderful ground floor master suite with a really spacious well-equipped en suite.

Feauturing wonderful high ceilings and spacious rooms throughout, Arch House has the advantage of both a large drawing room and a TV/games room, as well as a really large utility room with oodles of storage space.

The Grounds:
The house stands well back from the road in a well-timbered secluded setting, extending to over two acres. The drive leads down to a 5 - bar gate which in turn takes one through to a further drive with parking for 5 or more cars. There are formal gardens around the house as well as large south and west facing patios, with garden furniture. Beyond this is a massive lawned area (plenty of space for ball games) with fruit trees, oaks and silver birch.  Paths are cut through the wild garden leading down to The River Hundred which flows through to Thorpeness and the sea (2 miles).

This Big House Holiday Property is ideal for: A family get together or group of friends. The perfect house for entertaining, Arch House has a lovely kitchen and dining area where people can congregate, converse and cook.  If you fancy a quick jar prior to your meal you can take the two minutes walk to the Parrot and Punchbowl  - a firm favourite with locals and holidaymakers alike. Ground floor and first floor bedrooms and bathrooms mean that there are few restrictions for families wanting to get three or four generations together.

Surroundings:
Aldringham has a long and fascinating history - it is in fact mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Two thousand years ago the Hundred River, which backs on to the garden of Arch House, would have carried barges at high tide to and from the Roman town of Cogimagus where Knodishall church now stands. Ships anchored in the Haven which is now a charming wildlife rich marsh and water meadow lying between Thorpeness and Aldeburgh. The river was the northern boundary of Queen Aethelfleda's Benefice in the 7th century in Saxon times.

Although Aldringham and Thorpeness are two separate villages it seems that they were treated as one parish after the dissolution of Snape Priory in the 16th century. There is evidence of the name Aldringham-cum-Thorpe being used in 1650. The oldest building in the parish is the Parrot and Punchbowl public house just a couple of minutes walk from Arch House. Long associated with smuggling up to the late 18th century, the pub was used to store contraband before it was moved on to Bromeswell or Ipswich. A country road leads across the ancient heathland, past Thorpeness Golf Course to the village of Thorpeness and the coast, a lovely walk or cycle ride.

Self-catering: Nearby Aldeburgh has a large Co-op general store, and in the High Street you will find all the holiday provisions and treats you need; butchers, bakers, greengrocers, Lawsons Delicatessen, and, of course, there is no shortage of fish sheds dotted along the beach, selling freshly-caught seafood throughout the day.

Eating and Drinking Out:
Close by is the local pub, the Parrot and Punchbowl, and under 2 miles away in Thorpeness you will find the Dolphin Inn. Aldeburgh is full of wonderful eateries and pubs; for family dining, The White Lion Hotel has sea views and a traditional menu, and Prezzo provides a relaxed, friendly atmosphere for all ages. Aldeburgh Market Cafe serves delicious homemade lunches, and for slightly more formal dining try The RegattaBrudenell or The Lighthouse. However, no trip to Suffolk could be complete without trying the world-class Aldeburgh fish and chips. There are two great fish and chip shops in Aldeburgh High Street... you may have to queue but it will be well worth the wait.
