Description

Once a single storey cartshed and stables, Barn Owl Barn has since been beautifully converted into a spacious and comfortable holiday property for two. Situated on the edge of the lovely village of Walpole, where the Blyth river meanders through the village centre on the way to the sea at Southwold.

HALESWORTH 1.5 miles, DUNWICH & RSPB MINSMERE 9 miles, WALBERSWICK 10 miles,  FRAMLINGHAM 11 miles, SOUTHWOLD 12 miles, SNAPE 15 miles, ALDEBURGH 19 miles

A traditional Suffolk tiled and brick barn with clapperboard facing, Barn Owl Barn has been beautifully converted from a Victorian cartshed and stables to create a really spacious holiday cottage for two, with the accommodation perfectly laid out. With vaulted ceilings, beams and stud work the barn maintains its character and authenticity, but the interior is open, airy and modern, with floor to ceiling glass in the south facing living room letting in loads of light.

Grounds: The walled courtyard is an absolute suntrap, and also offers ample parking. The outside table and seat provide a perfect spot for al fresco drinks or dining in this wonderful quiet corner of rural Suffolk.

Sleeps: 2 (and a baby in arms)

Pets: 1 well-behaved dog is welcome.

Ideal for: Anyone looking to get away from it all, seeking peace and real comfort.

Walkers, bird watchers and fishermen will love it - there is a 1.5 acre lake behind the barn with carp, roach, rudd and perch (day permits available - contact details on request).

Nearby Halesworth is a fascinating and thriving old market town. The New Cut, a theatre complex, has a year round programme of plays and exhibitions. If you're interested in history, the station museum is particularly fascinating.

Halesworth also provides some great shopping opportunities in a wide range of unique and independent stores. Foodies will find themselves in heaven, with many local goods on offer, as well as delicious organic and 'deli' produce from further afield.

A visit to Southwold is a must whether you want to sit on the sandy beach, visit the pier (don't miss the 'under the pier' experience), wander around the shops or explore the plethora of historic buildings, museums and galleries. Also within a short drive of Barn Owl Barn is Walberswick, just south of Southwold across the River Blyth. Where Southwold is the perfect seaside resort of more innocent times, Walberswick really is the quintessential English seaside village. It is easy to walk from one to the other across the footbridge, or you can take the rowboat passenger ferry for the full English seaside experience.

Just a couple of miles south of Walberswick is Dunwich, with its beautiful heath and the world-famous nature reserve RSPB Minsmere (perhaps made even more famous by the 2014 series of BBC's Springwatch) - an absolute must-visit for
nature-lovers. Heading inland, Framlingham is just a few miles away, home to a stunning 12th century fortress - once the refuge of Mary Tudor. The concert hall at Snape Maltings is within easy driving distance, so Barn Owl Barn is a great base for visiting events there. And of course the coast at Aldeburgh and Orford is just a little way beyond.

Eating & Drinking: There are some excellent eateries in Halesworth, amongst them The Angel, Focus Cafe, and Singtong Neeyom Thai Restaurant. Halesworth has a really good deli in the Thoroughfare and a weekly market (Wednesday) selling excellent local produce. Southwold has some great restaurants and shops as well as a number of excellent Adnams pubs, and Walberswick can provide you with a number of good choices of where to eat - all you have to do is decide! Framlingham too has some great places to eat, such as The Station.

For more ideas on things to do and places to eat in the area, visit the webpages for 'Visit Framlingham' and 'Visit Southwold'.

Children: While young babies are more than welcome, Barn Owl Barn is not suitable for youngsters.

The Surroundings: Barn Owl Barn is on the edge of the beautiful village of Walpole on the River Blyth, backing on to farmland. Down in the village, the water meadows on either side of the river are so pretty; surrounded by traditional Suffolk cottages and houses, you might easily believe that you had stepped back 100 years.

The Old Chapel in Walpole is well worth a visit. The oldest surviving Nonconformist meeting place in the country, it was built as a farmhouse in 1607 and converted 40 years later. It is little changed today, with a three-tiered pulpit and simple wooden box-pews.

There is an abundance of footpaths in the immediate vicinity of Barn Owl Barn, and the lanes in the area are quiet and rural (not to mention reasonably flat!), making cycling a joy.
