Pump Cottage is a real gem of a self catering cottage. In Orford, one of the most popular seaside villages in Suffolk, and with its nationally acclaimed restaurants, picturesque houses, 12th century church, Norman castle and traditional cottages, it still retains the peace and tranquillity that makes this area so very special.
The cottage is situated opposite Orford's beautifully preserved Norman castle and the castle field, from where there are many walks along the river bank to Gedgrave and Butley Ferry, up through the woods and over the marshland. With the Alde estuary just a couple of minutes walk down the road there are opportunities for crabbing, sailing, bird watching, cycling and walking. In the midst of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this is a fantastic spot from which to explore this magical coastline; take a boat trip down the river or across to the National Trust nature reserve of Orford Ness.
It is a tricky choice whether to eat out or eat in. Fresh fish can be bought at Brinkley's Fish Shed down by the quay or at Pinney's where you can get a great range of fresh and smoked fish. For the rest of your shopping including meat go to Orford General Store which is just off Market Hill - you can even get a coffee and sit in the sunshine by the village pump. From Wednesday through to Sunday try the Pump Street Bakery, a continental patisserie/boulangerie, for the crustiest bread and the scrummiest doughnuts - yummy!
The nearest pub is The Kings Head Inn and down by the quay is The Jolly Sailor, which now has a lovely patio and garden area with views across the marshes to the sea wall. Both pubs provide excellent food at lunchtimes and evenings.
The two restaurants in the town are both worth eating at. Try Ruth and David Watson's Trinity Bistro at The Crown and Castle and, if you love your fish, eat at the non-pretentious The Butley Orford Oysterage.

Very cosy stay in our perfect cottage. Great NYE at The Crown & Castle, plus some lovely meals at The Unruly Pig. Many thanks Wendy & Keith for a wonderful welcome pack and generous treats. Weather behaved for some super walks. We will be back!
A lovely place to stay. Cosy cottage in a great location. Thanks
Perfect cottage for us - couple with dog. Many thanks for a peaceful weekend.
Just a few days in this lovely place. Cottage fitted the bill perfectly. The wood burner gave a lovely cosy feel to the place.
Yes another lovely visit for a week in this delightful cottage. Very comfortable beds, super long walks plus wonderful weather, made for a great break. Super Sunday lunch as The Crown & Castle and an excellent lunch as The Unruly Pig. Many thanks to Wendy for the welcome pack and kindness. Be back for the New Year.
This is a delightful very clean and well presented cottage in a lovely village surrounded by glorious countryside.
Enjoyed our stay in well presented cottage. Orford is a jewel away from the masses! Shops, pubs & restaurants excellent. Long haul back to Dorset - unfortunately.
Spotlessly clean and comfortable cottage. We have had a lovely few days. Orford is beautiful as is all the surrounding countryside. We have tried all the pubs and the fish restaurant and enjoyed them all. The Crown & Castle and the Butley Oyster Restaurant particularly. Great place to stay, thank you!
Our first visit to Orford, will certainly be returning. Local pubs very good, as are the shops. Good local walks around Orford and one around Thorpeness. The cottage is well equipped and welcome cake, milk and wine a nice surprise - Many thanks
Another lovely week - although the weather wasn't quite as well behaved as in July. More lovely meals at The Crown & Castle and two lovely BBQ's in the sweet garden with great pork and fresh veg from Orford Stores. Many t hanks for a super welcome pack. Look forward to our return in October. Thank you
Thank you for a lovely stay in your cosy cottage. We have had a very relaxing couple of days enjoying Orford. Your welcome pack went down a treat, our son loved the caramel shortbread and we enjoyed the wine with some local cheese in your delightful garden surrounded by Butterflies and Bees. We have found the Kings Head very friendly, good food & beer. Bought bread from the bakery and cheese from the local shop - all lovely. Enjoyed an ice cream and a blanket on the green outside the Jolly Sailor - excellent! I am sure we will return again to Orford.
You've thought of everything here which has been great. The garden superb and I've really enjoyed watching the bees and butterflies on the lavender. Thank you
First time in Suffolk. What a wonderful relaxed place. A real get away no arcades just good old fashioned seafronts with great locally produced food and drink. Fantastic.
Had a wonderful week here, very relaxing, did some walking, eating and drinking. Never been to this area before, will definitely be coming back.
Orford is a delightful village, and eating at The Crown and Castle is a real treat.
Have stayed in this cottage before, b ut it seems better - comfortable beds and a great TV. The weather has been amazing, the Pump Cottage has been and ideal base. Orford is such a delightful Village and we'll be taking goodies home from the bakery & Pinneys. Mostly ate excellent lunches and dinner at The Crown & Castle, so didn't have to walk far. Dusty the dog really enjoyed the secure garden and many thanks for the Welcome pack - see you next month, when we return.
A lovely stay at this small but perfectly formed cottage. Very clean and well equipped. We enjoyed very much our return to this area as we have family in Felixstowe. Never stayed in Orford before but love the village. VIsited our favourite spots in Aldeburgh, Snape, Ramsholt & Woodbridge and of course the lovely weather made it perfect. P.s. our dog Sadie loved the garden.
A heatwave, Wimbledon and the World Cup plus this splendid cottage - what a week! Thank you for the cleanliness and comfy beds and the welcome pack on arrival. The peace and quiet found here, after the noise of London, has been a real blessing,
The location is wonderful and the garden area a definite plus. Inside, the rooms were very comfortably and solidly furnished [not always the case with some of the smaller cottages we've stayed in!] The kitchen was well equipped and clean and the dining area comfortable for two. All in all a really comfortable place.
We have enjoyed staying in this really comfortable cottage. WE have stayed in small cottages before but few are as well furnished and presented at this one - and its in the best part of the village, close to places to shop and eat. Orford is such a relaxing place and then its close for other interesting places - Snape Maltings & the musical Festival, Aldeburgh, Minsmere & Sutton Hoo. There's been brilliant weather and lunching in your lovely garden!
Orford is lovely, peaceful and relaxing. We really enjoy the short walk to the Quay and looking at the boats and birds. The cottage makes a good base, we have spent happy times reading and eating in the garden.
Really enjoyed our stay in this clean and well equipped cottage. Orfordness was, as always, magical and we saw and heard cuckoos there. At Minsmere we saw an Otter and heard Bitterns,. Two pubs in the village are both good and we enjoyed dinner in the Fish Restaurant. I am sure The Pump Street Bakery has contributed tour waistlines.
Been a nice week despite the pretty terrible weather. Likeour house here very much and Wilf the Labradoodle has also been very comfortable. Lovely clean house with excellent facilities - very warm ad cosy. Big plus the bakery, Pinneys and the Fish restaurant - excellent, a real treat.
‘Had a lovely stay here in this cosy cottage. Very comfortable and everything you need for self catering. Had a good meal at Jolly Sailor and Kings Head. Both very friendly pubs’ Liz,Simon & Arnie (the dog), Herts Feb 2017
This was our third stay at Pump Cottage. The cottage is very well equipped, particularly the kitchen which, although small, has everything you could need. The quality of the bedding and towels is also exceptionally good.
Wonderful welcome pack and tasteful Xmas decorations- a very comfortable cottage in a perfect position.
We loved the cottage, and Orford and Suffolk – very wonderful places to visit, especially beautiful churches. Very comfortable bed, well equipped kitchen and a wonderful position under the guardianship of the Castle’
‘Very comfortable cottage, loved the garden and especially the shed for the bikes..... Orford is a lovely little town’
‘We have had a most relaxing break in Pump Cottage – the garden/courtyard a haven of scents, bees & birds. The whole of Orford England at its mid summer best’

‘What a wonderful time we had on our first visit to the beautiful Suffolk coast. Pump Cottage was great and fulfilled all our needs. If you really want to treat yourselves then have a meal at the Crown and Castle what an experience, rather pricey but fantastic!!’ Trevor, Michelle and Floss (the Yorkie), May 2017
‘Our second New Year at pump Cottage – we love it here! Cottage is so well equipped and has little touches that make it special ....we have made good use of the log burner- so cosy’
