If you love wildlife, walking, beautiful landscapes, and the arts, the village of Snape is the perfect place for you to take a cottage holiday. Situated on the River Alde in a designated Area of Natural Beauty, just 5 miles north of the coastal town of Aldeburgh, Snape is an historic village with a stunning marshland backdrop. The village is perhaps best known in recent years as home to Snape Maltings and Aldeburgh Music, created by world renowned composer, Benjamin Britten.
Snape Maltings is home to a variety of boutiques, galleries, eateries and of course the Snape Maltings Concert Hall, and Britten-Pears Music Academy. This has been the inspiration of many a musician and artist over the years and the Snape Proms and Aldeburgh Festival are just two of the highlights in a full and eclectic program of events that run throughout the year. The county’s largest food and drink festival is also held here every September.
Snape is the starting point (or ending point, depending on your point of view) of the Sailors Path, a 6-mile route of well-surfaced paths and tracks that meanders through tranquil heaths and marshland, to Aldeburgh. Don’t forget to take your binoculars on this spectacular trail as there is an abundance of birds, insects and other wildlife to spot along the way. Reward your efforts when you arrive in Aldeburgh with what many say are the best fish and chips in the world from ‘Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop.
